I have a mechanic friend who is lovingly nicknamed Captain Bullshit. He's a bloody good mechanic, but can't stop spewing shit.

His latest tale is about the new Focus RS, and how he can't decide whether to buy the estate version or the 5 door. I just smiled, unsure, but I nodded and said, 'oh yeh? Don't you mean the ST?'

'No no, there's an estate RS coming and a 4 door too. When I get one I'll give you a race.'

'Oh OK, well the Focus will destroy the Skoda. Bit of a pointless race.'

'Yeh definitely.'

Settle my mind, there's no Focus RS estate or 4 door due is there? I need to tell him he's an idiot.

Yep... mechanics know about issues you run into with the cars that are out on the road and common. But when it comes to new stuff or what car you should buy, you have to take what they say with a grain of salt.

They typically don't know about the latest thing coming out. And when it comes to what car to buy, the advice is usually centered around the types of cars they prefer to fix.

For example... my sister had a boyfriend who liked the old RWD Chevettes. They're cheap to buy, the parts are cheap and they're easy to fix.

But the old RWD Chevettes were absolute crap.. particularly in the winter in the snow belt. My sister went through 3 POS Chevettes in 3 years. And then he got her a fucking POS Chrysler K car that fell apart within a couple of years... but he also thought the K-car was "good"... again... cheap parts, cheap to fix, cheap to buy... but in every other goddamn way, it was a piece of shit. After that, it was a POS Chevy Astro.

When she finally started listening to me, I got her into a used but mint condition basic Mazda Protege... and that car lasted her longer than any of the "mechanic recommended" cars she had. After that, a used Ford Focus... which lasted her 5-6 years.

And never EVER buy a used car that was owned/used by a mechanic as his personal vehicle. If a mechanic is dumping a car, you can bet he's getting rid of it because it has some serious/expensive issues that will need to be addressed in the near future. On top of that, it's likely he'll do shit that will temporarily mask the issue... like varying tire pressures to mask alignment issues. And overgreasing ball joints to mask the fact that they're worn and need replacing.

It's safe to say that I wouldn't take his advice on buying a car, and I wouldn't buy one off him unless it was a classic. I've never seen someone so meticulous with a cork gasket before.
